Timmy Wants to Read

Fairy Garden 2021

Fairy Garden 2021

“AHHH,” Timmy dips his fairy toes and wings into the blue waterfall to cool off. He tosses a pebble and watches it splash. Timmy darts left and right. He’s known as the fastest fairy in town. He zips under a leaf and looks around the fairy garden and sees Butterscotch Bunny’s 1st Place winning carrots. They look wonderful! Timmy wonders if the other fairies have seen them?

Timmy feels the moss under his wings from his hiding place behind plants as he listens to children pretending in the fairy garden. He loves their stories. He remembers the day he had a close call and was nearly seen by a little human girl named Gabby. She had fun red shoes. She was reading a story from a book to the fairies. Timmy tried to look over her shoulder at the words on the page. Gabby was sure she saw a fairy, but her friend Chad didn’t believe her.

Timmy dreams from way up high on Acorn Hill how one day he will know how to read all the words. He wants to be ready for fairy first grade next year. He already loves stories more than popcorn, racing butterflies, or catching snowflakes on his tongue.

Even Timmy’s home rests on a book on Library Lane. Timmy’s heart beams that his house sits on top of an open book. From his special bedroom, daydreams float up like cotton ball clouds on a summer day. His favorite new thing to do is to practice writing his letters with chalk on the sidewalk. He shares his chalk with everyone and hopes children will write him notes on the sidewalk to help him practice his reading. And they do, especially Gabby! Timmy giggles how he reads their notes at night so children don’t see him. He wonders if the children know his friends Frolic Firefly and Fancy Firefly light up the words for him. His heart warms to have such kind friends.

Timmy welcomes everyone to dream and play here. He hopes children make up a story, bring a book to read, or leave a note with paper or chalk for him. Timmy remembers not to be seen! But if someone does see him, encourage him to keep trying to learn to read!
